About Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, located in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand at an altitude of about 3,583 meters near the Mandakini River. The temple is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas after the Mahabharata and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains and breathtaking valleys, Kedarnath is also an important part of the Char Dham Yatra. Every year thousands of devotees and travelers visit the temple between May and October for spiritual peace, adventure, and scenic beauty. The journey usually starts from Haridwar or Rishikesh and continues by road to Gaurikund, from where pilgrims complete a 16–18 km trek to reach the temple, while helicopter, pony, and palki services are also available. The temple remains closed during winter because of heavy snowfall, and the idol is moved to Omkareshwar Temple for पूजा. Kedarnath is famous not only for its religious importance but also for its peaceful atmosphere, ancient stone architecture, beautiful trekking routes, and nearby attractions like Bhairavnath Temple and Vasuki Tal, making it one of the most unforgettable pilgrimage destinations in India.
